Saved? How Do You Know? - Part 2
God does not want His people living with doubts. John wrote his first epistle so that those who believe on the name of the Son of God may know that they have eternal life. After a review of the foundation of salvation, found only in the Son of God and received by a heart belief that trusts Him alone, and of the first test, a desire to obey God's Word, this message completes the evidences of salvation that John lists. Every test in Scripture is a test of present reality, not of a past experience. A genuine believer loves the brethren, bearing the family resemblance of a Father who loves His children, and finds his closest companionship among God's people. He enjoys real, ongoing fellowship with the Father and with His Son in worship, prayer, and the Word, and he cannot be content when sin interrupts that fellowship. And because he abides in Christ, his walk is being conformed to Christ's, so that His attitudes, values, and conduct increasingly show up in his life. Like road signs that tell a sleeping child he has crossed into a new state, these marks give Bible assurance regardless of feelings.
