Tonight, we return to the study of Jeremiah, the prophet known for his tender tears & tough message of judgment. If anyone could have closely identified with Jesus in the sense of being a man of sorrow, it was Jeremiah. In fact, the rabbis called Jeremiah “the Weeping Prophet” because his ministry was one of constant sorrow as he essentially presided over the funeral of his nation. During his ministry, the false prophets were proclaiming to the apostate nation, “Peace, Peace” when there was no peace, & Jeremiah knew it. They were saying in effect, “Our country is fine. Everything is going to be OK.” But GOD had revealed to Jeremiah that destruction was on its way. And he had the dismal task of delivering the funeral message to his own nation. As hard as the truth of coming judgment was to preach, Jeremiah was faithful to the task. Tonight, we want to look at how his ministry began.
