In verses 1 through 15 we discovered that Jeremiah was locked up by King Zedekiah for preaching the Truth. Because the message was one of judgment against his nation & the king, Jeremiah was viewed as unpatriotic & a traitor. That landed him in jail. While incarcerated, the Lord instructed Jeremiah to buy the land that his cousin would offer to sell him. Redeeming your family’s land in the event that they fell on hard times wasn’t strange, in fact, it was common; but buying the land during a time of war, at the moment when the Babylonian army possessed it, was not very logical. That would be considered a foolish investment. Who would buy a parcel of land that had already fallen into enemy hands? There is only one good explanation for the strange things Christians do: They believe in the promises of GOD! GOD instructed Jeremiah to buy the land, this was a symbol of hope for the nation (that they’d one day repossess the land), & so by faith, Jeremiah purchased the land.
