The story of Zacchaeus’ conversion is as well-known as any Bible story. The idea of a wee little man up a tree, perched like a bird, in order to catch a glimpse of Jesus is actually kind of humorous. And while we often have fun with this story, we must remember that the encounter with Zacchaeus occupies a very serious place in the account of Jesus’ life because it is Jesus’ last personal encounter in Luke’s gospel before His arrival in Jerusalem & the events leading to His death. Just a few verses later (beginning in vs.28) Jesus will make His Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem & then be crucified just a few days later. In light of this, the salvation of Zacchaeus gives spiritual insight to Jesus’ purpose in coming to this world. Jesus summarized His own purpose this way:
Luk 19:10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
