1Pe 2:21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:
The word for “example” is hypogrammos. It literally means “underwriting” & refers to a writing or drawing that a student reproduces by tracing. You see, in ancient times when they wanted to teach children how to write, they would take a writing which contained the letters of their alphabet, & place it under a piece of paper so that the young students could see the letters through the top sheet & trace the letters perfectly. That’s the word Peter uses in the phrase “leaving us an example” when speaking of Jesus Christ. In other words, Jesus Christ is the One by whom we trace the attitude & behavior of our lives, whether in good times or bad. Church, Jesus Christ has left us an original template to copy with our lives. In word & deed, child of GOD, we’re to strive to be reproductions of our Savior.
